Coughing, sneezing, and itching have entered the chat. Just like humans, horses can suffer from seasonal allergies. Allergies are abnormal reactions to substances found in the environment. These reactions can manifest into skin allergies, such as hives, and respiratory allergies, such as coughing. But it isn’t too late to help your horse feel more comfortable this summer.
Skin Allergies
A skin allergy is one of the most common reactions seen in horses. These can manifest into hives or dry, itchy skin. Hives are a cluster of itchy bumps that can appear anywhere on your horse’s body. They are commonly seen on the neck and shoulders and can grow in size. Hives usually appear within 12-14 hours of contact. These frustrating bumps can stay for days or weeks if you don’t figure out the cause and just like you, these annoying reactions can ruin your horse’s day.

Swishing their tail may not be enough to keep mosquitos and Culicoides away. A fly sheet such as Horseware Ireland’s Amigo Aussie Fly Sheet can help prevent reactions caused by bug bites or contact with weeds. Fly sheets will prevent bugs from biting your horse or your horse from rubbing against plants that may be causing the reaction.

If you live in an area that is too hot for fly sheets or your horse gets blanket rubs easily, fly spray, such as Pyranha Wipe N’Spray, can also help limit bug bites that are causing reactions.

If you are not sure what is causing your horse’s allergies, a feed-through supplement can be an inclusive option. Equishield Skin & Allergy Powder helps with common seasonal and year-round allergens. It supports proper immune responses and maintains histamine levels to reduce the side effects. This palatable supplement is a barn favorite for sensitive horses in the hot summer months.
” My 16 year old Quarter horse is a super sensitive guy. He gets terrible hives in the summer and struggles with disgusting rain rot. I already love Kinetic Vet products so I decided to give this a try. It has helped significantly so far this summer. I have noticed he is not nearly as itchy as he normally is in the summer and his skin and tail look great.”

Important Note:
It’s important when adding any supplement to your horse’s diet that you consult with your veterinarian. Visible allergy reactions can many times be treated on your own, but if you notice things worsening a quick call to your vet might be in order.
Respiratory Allergies
Respiratory allergies are common in horses and can show up as coughing, sneezing, or difficulty breathing.

An easy way to reduce allergens is to remove mold and dust from hay. HayGain is a state-of-the-art hay steamer that eliminates dust, mold, and allergens commonly found in hay. The HayGain HG One is even light enough to easily travel with you to horse shows.

For overall protection, Aleira by Arenus protects against respiratory issues and allergies. Aleira is a top-of-the-line respiratory supplement that boosts the immune system to help horses with recurrent airway obstructions, inflammatory airway disease, and allergens.

For horses who suffer from severe allergies, the Flexineb 3, can help your horse breathe better this season. The nebulizer uses aerosolized medications and natural therapies to get right to the source of the problem. It is lightweight, quiet, and portable so it is perfect for horse shows and at home.
