If you were to guess where one of the premier equine rehabilitation and training facilities in the United States is located, I’d bet you wouldn’t choose the state of Washington. Tucked in the lush hills of East Redmond, this stately 100-acre compound is a horse utopia. As you pass through the gates and wind down manicured paths, the property is reminiscent of many Bluegrass facilities. Pegasus Training and Rehabilitation offers a full array of leading-edge equine services. Their services range from breaking, rehab, training, and everything in between!
Pegasus realizes the dreams of owner Dr. Mark Dedomenico, replete with a leading spa for horses, the latest training methods, and expert staff who share the passion for the equine athlete. Dr. Dedomenico has an impressive background as a distinguished heart surgeon. His medical efforts have played a vital role in developing life-changing tools and procedures, including coronary bypass surgery. He has been involved in the horse racing industry for 40+ years and was inducted into the Washington Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2017.
This state-of-the-art facility boasts 17 buildings, immaculate barns with adjoining eurocisers, a 5/8-mile Polytrack surfaced racetrack, starting gates, rubber brick walking paths, lush pastures, and a large Polytrack-surfaced indoor arena that stays eerily spotless and organized. The rehabilitation area is on the far side of the property with an extraordinary collection of therapy options. These options include a hyperbaric chamber, water treadmill, swimming pool, cold saltwater spa, equine solarium, stem cell therapy, nuclear scintigraphy, vibration plates, and Game Ready machines. Um, yes, please!
The treatment and recovery process from illness, injury or chronic disorders with each horse at Pegasus is carefully designed to match that specific horse’s needs. Being able to use the plethora of therapy options, as well as ride on the Polytrack arena and track, is absolutely the whole shebang of sport horse care. The picture-perfect surfaces allow training through inclement weather to ensure a non-changing, confidence-building, year-round safe surfaces for the equine athlete.
The professional, passionate and experienced staff at Pegasus really make the facility shine…as if it weren’t shiny enough. Mike Puhich is the Trainer and Director of Horse Operations. Puhich comes from a family of recognized horsemen and is a well-known expert in his own right. He began training in 1984 and has trained all over the country. Puhich’s skillful eye, boundless experience, his knack for dealing with young horses, and supportive attitude towards his coworkers and clients make him an integral part of the Pegasus team.
Other key staff members include Brennan Tweedy and Melissa Ledford, lifelong horse girls who have experience in a multitude of different disciplines…shout out to all the horse girls in da house! These professional women handle the customers, their affiliates, and the horses with a positive, warm, and proficient manner.
