Starting Out in the Saddle

Beginner Rider and FarmVet Shopper Klaire Hopkins

As a beginner rider, one of the best things about starting horseback riding lessons is that you don’t have to buy anything. There’s no need to splurge on fancy gear or stress over having the perfect outfit. Oftentimes, you can borrow a helmet from your barn, wear some heeled boots, and enjoy the ride.

But after a lesson or two, you might start to notice a few things… like how the sun feels extra hot in the saddle, how gripping the reins will leave your hands feeling raw, and how sharing a well-worn lesson helmet is… an experience.

So, while you can absolutely ride with what you have, here are three beginner rider essentials I personally recommend picking up before (or soon after) your first lesson —because a little extra comfort can make a big difference.

3 Gear Recommendations for Riding

1. A Layerable Sunshirt

My first recommendation for beginner riders would be a sunshirt. These fitted, long-sleeved tops offer sun protection while remaining incredibly breathable, thanks to built-in mesh panels along the underarms. You can also wear them as a base layer in colder temps, making them the perfect staple for multiple seasons! Having a sun shirt like this Kastel Denmark one will provide protection from the sun’s UV rays, will allow your trainer to see your posture as you ride, and will help to keep you cooler in the scorching summer months. Not to mention, they’re versatile as an activewear top for other forms of exercise or everyday wear!

2. Quality Gloves

My second recommendation is to invest in riding gloves. Gloves will help to protect your hands, while also providing improved grip on your reins. There are many brands on the market, so I’ll share the advice I received when I decided I was tired of having my fingers rubbed raw by my reins: Splurge on leather gloves to avoid having to repurchase them frequently. After 10 months, my Roeckl Roeck-Grip Gloves are still in perfect condition! With touch-screen compatible finger tips and the ability to wash them in the washing machine, they are a beginner’s essential for riding lessons.

3. Your Own Helmet

My final recommendation would be a helmet. For me, this is the most important investment you can make when starting lessons. While most barns have helmets to borrow, having your own ensures a comfortable and secure fit —and when it comes to safety, that’s something worth prioritizing. I recommend choosing a helmet with MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System), like the One K Defender Chrome Stripe, which helps reduce the risk of brain injury in the event of a fall. Riding has its risks, but thanks to the advancement in helmet technology, protecting yourself has never been easier—or more stylish!

Sticking to the Basics

At the end of the day, you don’t need a closet full of gear to start riding. But if there are a few things that can make your lessons safer, more comfortable, and a little more enjoyable? I say they’re well worth it. Whether it’s shielding yourself from the sun, saving your hands from blisters, or ensuring your head is protected, these three items are small investments that go a long way. So if you’re gearing up for your first lesson, consider grabbing one (or all) of these essentials — you’ll thank yourself later!
