Summertime means longer days, trail rides, and of course, show season! However, it also means rising temperatures, which can become very dangerous to our equine partners, especially when it comes to transporting them. High temperatures, poor ventilation, and the stress of travel can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke in horses. So, how do we keep our horses cool and safe while shipping this season? Check out our tips and must-have items below to find out!

Electrolytes and Water

Staying hydrated is paramount when it comes to trailering in the heat. Just like us, horses lose water and essential electrolyte minerals when they sweat. Electrolytes help encourage hydration, support muscle and nerve function, and more. So, it’s essential that we replenish them. Having your horses on daily electrolytes during the warmer months will help to keep them better hydrated overall. And when you need a little extra help, a quick paste or powder in their feed is a convenient way to get them some additional support. There’s even a non-transdermal patch available now!

Electrolytes will encourage your horse to drink. Be sure to stop every few hours during your trip to offer them clean, fresh water. The AgSilver CleanBucket from EquiFit is a great choice when traveling. It is embedded with ionic silver to help control the spread of bacteria and create cleaner-tasting water.

First Aid Kit

Emergencies can happen, and it’s best to be prepared. We recommend keeping a first aid kit in your trailer so you’re ready to handle any unexpected situations. Overheating is common when shipping in hot weather due to the limited airflow and ventilation in trailers. Horses also engage their stabilizing muscles when being transported, which can further elevate their overall body temperature. Having a thermometer handy makes it quick and easy to check your horse’s temperature while traveling.

Cold Therapy

Ice and cool water will do wonders when it comes to helping your horse from overheating, but carrying bags of ice around with you is bulky and inconvenient. Plus, it’s going to melt faster than you can use it! Cold Therapy, however, is an innovative way to help your horse keep its cool. FarmVet has a large variety of options available – from cooling gel pads for under shipping bandages, to an entire ice back blanket for ultimate cooling! One of the most portable options we have is the Carry-Cool Sport Horse Cooling Kit by EquiSources. This convenient wrap comes with its own ice packs and insulated carrying case to keep it cool on the go.

And don’t forget about man’s best friend if they’re out and about with you in the heat! We have cooling options for your dog as well, such as the Cool on Track Cooling Towel and the Core Cooling Vest.

Get Ready to Hit the Road
