Thrush in horses is especially common during winter, but it’s also one of the most preventable hoof conditions with the right care routine. Wet footing, limited turnout, and less frequent grooming all create the perfect environment for thrush. But understanding what causes thrush, how to spot it early, and how to prevent and treat it during the colder months can help keep your horse comfortable and sound all winter long.

What Is Thrush?

Thrush is a bacterial infection that affects the frog of the hoof. It thrives in damp, dark, and dirty environments—conditions that are especially common in winter due to mud, snow, ice, and stalled horses.

The common causes of thrush include prolonged exposure to wet or muddy conditions, standing in urine- or manure-soaked bedding, and infrequent hoof cleaning during colder months. Horses with poor hoof conformation, such as deep frog grooves that trap debris, are also more susceptible. Changes in exercise and turnout routines, and even changes to arena footing can also affect hoof moisture balances.

Thrush symptoms are often first noticed during routine hoof cleaning. A strong, foul odor is one of the most recognizable signs, along with black or dark gray discharge in the grooves of the frog. The frog tissue may appear soft or deteriorated. Some horses may even show sensitivity when pressure is applied. In more advanced cases, thrush can cause discomfort and lameness if left completely untreated. Early detection is key as mild thrush can be easy to manage, but advanced infections can penetrate deeper tissues and become painful and slow to resolve.

Winter Thrush Prevention

Prevention is the best medicine when it comes to thrush, and avoiding thrush is all about moisture control, cleanliness, and consistency. Picking hooves daily, keeping stalls clean and well-bedded, and maintaining proper farrier care and hoof health are all key to keeping thrush away.

Cavalor Dry Feet helps prevent thrush by keeping hooves dry and creating an environment where bacteria can’t thrive. Its fast-acting, non-irritating formula supports healthy frogs and soles, especially in wet or muddy conditions.

“LOVE this product. Our turnout is limited and often quite wet. Because of that, we are constantly battling thrush and weak soles. This product has been such a game-changer since starting to use it earlier this year. A little goes a long way, and it doesn’t have harmful side effects like some other products we’ve used to battle the wet. Highly recommend.”

Cornucrescine Daily Hoof Barrier forms a breathable, water-repellent shield that protects the hoof from excess moisture, bacteria, and environmental damage. It’s ideal for daily use as it helps maintain strong, healthy hooves and reduces the risk of issues like thrush and softening feet in wet conditions.

Natural Hoof Mender Putty fills and seals cracks, crevices, and nail holes to block out moisture, dirt, and bacteria that can lead to thrush. Its natural, antibacterial formula helps support hoof repair while creating a clean and protected hoof environment.

How Should I Treat Thrush in the Winter?

If thrush does develop in your horse’s hooves this winter, don’t fret! Prompt treatment can stop it from worsening, even in cold, wet winter conditions.

Corona Thrush and Shield Spray is designed to treat thrush by targeting the bacteria and fungi that cause it while helping dry and toughen the affected areas. The spray is easy to apply deep into the frog and other crevices. It also leaves behind a protective shield that supports healing and helps prevent thrush from returning. Plus, no staining!

“We have been battling thrush at my barn for months. It feels like we have used every product on the market, but as soon as we stopped using them, the thrush returned. Finally, I tried this spray. I use it after every ride and have had no issues since, even if I forget to use it. I will be keeping this in my grooming box.”

Groom’s Hand Thrush Solution is a thrush treatment and multitool all in one! With a built-in hoof pick, all you need to do is pick, flip, and spray. The continuous aerosol spray is packed full of all-natural ingredients like tea tree and Gentian Violet, which will both clear up your current thrush problem and protect those hooves in the future.

No Thrush is a tough-on-thrush, but hoof-friendly, dry remedy. It targets the bacteria and fungi causing the problem without burning or damaging healthy tissue. It’s simple to use and safe enough to apply regularly.

“This is a great product for treating stubborn thrush. I find it is best for horses that are prone to getting thrush in between the bulb of the frog or up into the heel in the delicate tissue. When the delicate tissue is affected, you don’t want to use the purple stuff, as it will burn like crazy. No Thrush does not burn, and the dry powder will coat, dry, and treat thrush. For really tough cases, I alternate between white lightening treatment and No Thrush. Another plus is that you won’t stain the floor, your hands, or your clothes if you get some on you!”
